Our Interests: Community and Road Safety

We have built up a real interest in community and road safety over the last 10 years.  Initially we focused on the impact of road safety in deprived areas.  We have more recently evaluated road safety education campaigns – including (at a national level) Crash Magnets and the Children’s Traffic Club; and (at a local level) the Ayrshire campaign for senior secondary pupils – Reckless Driving, Wrecks Lives.

We supported the development of the current Road Safety Framework by carrying out focus groups with young people in different parts of Scotland.

Safety in the Community

This has developed into a wider interest in community safety.  We have:

• conducted a technical and organisational review and developed options for CCTV in West Dunbartonshire
• evaluated the impact of Campus Police in South Ayrshire
• provided evaluation support to the Joint Action Group on Tackling Violence in Inverclyde
• supported the Community Safety Unit and the six national organisations that it sponsors to develop outcome focused business plans
• developed and facilitated the workshops at the Scottish National Community Safety Convention in 2009 and 2010.
